ABSTRACT

This study characterized and measured self-medication in adult population, as well as identified possible associations between lifestyle and risk factors for the use of over-the-counter medications. This is an epidemiological, cross-sectional study, carried out in the primary health care of a city in Brazil. The data collection instrument was a semi-structured survey grouped into thematic blocks. The statistical analysis included a bivariate analysis and a binomial logistic regression provided the statistics. Of the 537 participants, 42.83% reported having used medication without a prescription in the last 15 days. There were associations between the dependent variable and migraine (OR = 3.347); current pain (OR = 2.189); use of medications under the influence of family members (OR = 2.431); not reading drugs' leaflet (OR = 1.682); and lack of leisure activities (OR = 4.335). A significant part of users of primary health care self-medicated.

ABSTRACT

The use of drugs without prescription is a worldwide public health problem, because it induces adverse effects, including intoxication, development of resistant strains, and iatrogenic diseases. This study characterized and measured self-medication in adult and elderly populations in primary health care, as well as identified possible associations between lifestyle and risk factors for the use of over-the-counter medications. This is an epidemiological, crosssectional, quantitative study, carried out in the primary health care of a medium-sized city in the state of São Paulo. We conducted the research using a semi-structured survey, which included three thematic blocks and a questionnaire called FANTASTIC Lifestyle. The statistical analysis included a bivariate analysis, a binomial logistic regression, and the MannWhitney non-parametric test. To collect data in view of the high number of individuals registered in health units, we calculated the study sample considering that 50% of the adult and elderly population self-medicate, as verified in the literature. To correct eventual losses, 20% (n = 77) were added to the sample size, with an accuracy of 5% and a 95% confidence interval, totaling a minimum final sample of 461 participants. The sample comprised 537 participants, and 98.1% of them reported they self-medicated in the last 15 days. There were associations between the dependent variable and migraine (OR = 3.347 95% CI 1.011-11.078); current pain (OR = 2.189 CI 95% 1, 251-3,882); use of medications under the influence of family members (OR = 2.431 CI 95% 1, 402-4.215) and recommendation of drugs for acquaintances (OR = 1.965 CI 95% 1.246- 3.099); not reading drugs' leaflet (OR = 1.682 CI95% 1.079-2.624); medication expenditures in the last 30 days (OR = 1.532 95% CI 1.032-2.273); and lack of leisure activities (OR = 4.335 95% CI 1.509-12.456). Concerning antibiotics, 40.6% of individuals used this therapeutic class without prescription in the last 12 months. We observed associations between the dependent variable and current pain (OR = 2.390 95% CI 1.4144.041); medication stored in the home (OR = 2.124 0 95% CI 1.222-4.021); and use of medication on someone's recommendation (OR = 1.722 CI 95% 1.127-2.631). Also, participants who used antibiotics without prescription in the period of one year had the lowest values in all domains assessed by FANTASTIC Lifestyle, and they had the highest proportions in the final score of "Fair" and "Needs improvement". A significant part of users of primary health care self-medicated, including antibiotics. In the investigation of lifestyle, individuals who used antibiotics had the lowest values in the domains assessed and presented higher proportions in the score "Need to improve" and "Average". Regarding risk factors associated with self-medication, the following stood out: presence of pain, use of therapeutic classes under influence, medication stored in the home, not reading drugs' leaflet, and lack of leisure activities. Therefore, raising awareness about the potential risks of self-medication may produce positive impacts on the population's health care and strengthens public health policies(AU)

ABSTRACT

Aim: The objective of this research was to evaluate the prevalence of painful symptoms among dental academics, as well as their associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out at a public higher education institution, and the study population (n = 303) included undergraduate students who studied at least one subject that included clinical activities. For data collection, two self-administered questionnaires were delivered to the participants, the first of which consisted of sociodemographic variables, academic life, harmful habits, physical activity practice, and general health. The validated Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire was used to identify musculoskeletal symptoms, the need to seek health resources, and to assess whether the disorders interfered with the work activities of academics. Results: The presence of pain in the past 12 months was observed in 199 participants (82.6%). Several variables, including gender, number of courses performed, physical activity, and general health status, had an association with painful symptoms in at least one area of the body (GA) over the past 12 months. In addition, variable general health was associated with pain symptoms in any area of the body (DG) over the past seven days. Conclusion: There was a high prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms, especially in the upper limbs, and there were associations between muscular pain and the number of disciplines studied and between muscular pains and the general health of the students
